Description

RiverBend Materials, a CRH Company, has recently developed a low EPD GWP (Global Warming Potential) 3000psi commercial grade concrete mix design for the City of Eugene, Oregon to be used on all City of Eugene Commercial grade concrete applications. They are currently planning on using two versions of the mix in an upcoming ADA Ramp pilot project for the City of Eugene. Both versions use a PLC cement utilizing a 15% cement clinker replacement of inter ground limestone -- Version 1 utilizes 35% slag and Version 2 uses 50% slag.

They have batched and poured two test slabs with both versions of this mix while utilizing a local contractor to do all the placing and finishing work as well as providing feedback. The contractor gave positive reviews and stated that both mixes finished well and showed good set times. Both versions of the mix were tested by our in‐house quality control lab as well as third-party testers hired by the City of Eugene. Results were promising as both mixes met all ACI requirements for PSI over design for new mixes. Version 1 had a 28-day average strength of 4680psi and Version 2 was 4480psi in 28 days. By using these mixes, they were able to lower the EPD GWP Value for commercial-grade concrete from 191 kg CO2/yd3 to 162 for Version 1 and 137 for Version 2.

RiverBend Materials was able to keep the design of the mix, maintain set times, and most importantly, they were able to significantly lower the Global Warming Potential of the mix.
