American Rock Products (ARP), a CRH Company, partnered with AWS to produce concrete mixes with a lower carbon footprint, as part of AWS’ and CRH’s vision on carbon reduction.

ARP began by analyzing its production processes to determine the touch points where carbon emissions could be eliminated -- a measure that would take an entire year. The process started with developing EPD’s for our mixes with AWS which we carried out to all other markets. The concrete mixes developed by American Rock Products have a lower GWP than NRMCA mixes. Efforts made by ARP based on the discussions with AWS have led to reductions of GWP by up to 23% off traditional mixes.

The concrete mixes have been used on projects with the overall goal to develop future mixes that reduce the GWP and meet AWS’ needs on performance. Since developing the mixes, ARP has continued to work with the engineering team to set up future goals to further reduce GWP with design specification changes. American Rock Products is continuing R&D to utilize product reduction and substitutions to reduce the overall GWP.

American Rock Products will continue to work closely with the AWS team to develop low-carbon mixes to use on their projects as well as any other upcoming projects not associated with AWS.
