Geneva Rock played a crucial role in The Worthington's success, supplying high-performance concrete for this 31-story high-rise. Their team developed and refined a 12,000 psi concrete mix for the shear and core walls—an unprecedented strength level for the region. Trial batching and 90-day break tests ensured structural integrity. Geneva Rock also provided 2,940 cubic yards of concrete for the 13-hour mat foundation pour. Their expertise in mix design and logistics was critical in achieving the project's aggressive schedule and structural demands.

Project Description & Concrete Innovations:
The Worthington is a 31-story mixed-use tower reshaping Salt Lake City’s skyline. Located downtown, it features 359 upscale residential units, 5,800 square feet of ground-floor retail, and 15,000 square feet of amenities, including a 12th-floor pool deck, fitness center, and rooftop gathering spaces.

The project demanded innovative concrete solutions to meet structural and scheduling challenges. Layton Construction’s concrete team poured 26,603 cubic yards of concrete, with 230,000 man-hours dedicated to precision and efficiency. A key achievement was maintaining a 6-7 day floor cycle on typical levels, a milestone for high-rise construction in the region.
The use of 12,000 psi concrete in the core increased structural capacity while reducing column sizes, maximizing usable space. To counter summer heat, Geneva Rock implemented chilled water in the mix to prevent overheating, ensuring long-term durability.

The mat foundation pour was among Layton’s largest, requiring extensive planning and coordination to complete ahead of schedule. Worker and public safety remained a priority, with reinforced scaffolding, wind barriers, and strict fall protection measures in place.

Through cutting-edge concrete techniques, careful sequencing, and expert collaboration, The Worthington stands as a benchmark for innovation in high-rise construction, elevating the standards for urban development in Salt Lake City.

The Worthington is a groundbreaking achievement in high-rise residential construction, marking Layton Construction's first such project in Salt Lake City. This 31-story tower required innovative concrete solutions to maximize efficiency, structural integrity, and safety within a tight urban footprint.

A key innovation was integrating a four-story parking garage within the structure, optimizing space while maintaining architectural and functional integrity. The concrete team poured 26,603 cubic yards of concrete, with Layton contributing 230,000 man-hours to ensure precision and efficiency. Once the project reached typical floors (Levels 13 through the roof), Layton achieved a major milestone—pouring a new floor every 6-7 days, an unprecedented feat in the region. This required meticulous sequencing, coordination across trades, an an unwavering commitment from the team, who worked six to seven days a week to meet demands.

The project also introduced 12,000 psi concrete in shear and core walls, a strength level rarely used in the region. Due to limited local experience with such a high-performance mix, Layton partnered closely with suppliers, conducting extensive trial batches and 90-day break tests to refine the mix. Managing this challenge during peak summer months required innovative solutions, such as chilled water to prevent overheating, ensuring structural performance and durability.

One of the most complex and demanding phases was the mat foundation pour, one of the largest in Layton's history. The team collaborated with Geneva Rock to coordinate a 13-hour, 2,940-yard concrete placemat, sourcing material from three different batch plants to ensure a continuous flow. This massive undertaking was completed ahead of schedule, demonstrating Layton's expertise in large-scale concrete operations.

Safety was paramount throughout the project. Given the dense urban location, extensive measures were implemented, including reinforced scaffolding, perimeter barriers, and wind protection to secure materials. Worker safety protocols were strictly enforced, with fall protection, barrier cables, and strategic scheduling to minimize risk.

Through advanced concrete techniques, strategic planning, and a commitment to excellence, Layton Construction delivered an innovative, high-performance structure that sets a new standard for urban high-rise construction in Salt Lake City.
