Jamestown Power House Skatepark

Description

The Jamestown Power House Skatepark is a 10,000 square foot outdoor skatepark located at 117 Fairmount Avenue, Jamestown, NY. The design incorporated large concrete pillars and foundations from a previous structure on the site, showcasing innovation and adaptability. The crescent wrench design pays homage to Jamestown's historical significance as the birthplace of this invention.

The project involved collaboration among community advocates, city officials, and funding partners, including a $300,000 contribution from The Skatepark Project (formerly the Tony Hawk Foundation). Despite challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, public input was gathered via Zoom, ensuring community engagement and satisfaction.

The skatepark has become a beloved landmark for local skateboarders, contributing to the regional economy and community pride. This project highlights the transformation of a historic site into a vibrant community space, emphasizing sustainable and innovative urban design.

Municipal & Construction Supply - JMI (Jamestown Macadam, Inc.) was actively involved in this project as the as the project’s concrete ready-mix supplier. Heidelberg Materials served as their portland cement supplier, ensuring high-quality materials and professional expertise were brought to the skatepark construction. The Jamestown Power House Skatepark is recognized as part of the Built to Play portfolio, showcasing its importance in promoting skateboarding and community activities.

With grant funds of up to $250,000, the Built to Play Skatepark Program supports community groups and municipalities seeking to create free, public skateparks that serve low-income communities. Built to Play Skatepark Grants also include an additional $50,000 to fund processes and design features that lessen the environmental impact of the skatepark. The Built to Play Skatepark Program also provides advisory services and advocacy training to assist groups in organizing and managing their efforts.
