Description

Silvi Construction Division
Larry Silvi II/John Silvi/Larry Silvi III-Ownership; Zach Rich-VP Construction

Service: Silvi Construction divisions sole mission is to only provide the exclusive service of bidding and direct contracting to install concrete pavement in lieu of asphalt. A service that is a first of its kind for a ready-mix producer to advance and develop the concrete pavement market in the northeast United States. Silvi is providing this turnkey service for its strategic partners including Real Estate Owners, Developers, General Contractors, and Concrete Contractors throughout its service area.

Description: The Silvi family has a long outstanding reputation for being at the forefront in advancing concrete as a product, and also the means and methods throughout the production supply chain for this versatile construction material. Over the years, Silvi has been working hard to provide our clients with all the added benefits of using concrete as a building material as opposed to asphalt. We’ve been relentless over the last 10 years every year pushing this narrative. It’s time for the next step. In the summer of 2022, Silvi began building a subsidiary company that is capable of pricing/bidding directly as a contractor to install concrete pavements. This is a natural next step for the vertical supply chain of Silvi Materials to include this one stop shop to our clients.

Concrete mix designs and raw materials are being utilized with durability in mind, sustainability goals, increasing energy efficiencies, and built to last a lifetime with high quality control tolerances from the sand and stone quarries, cement mill, ready mix manufacturing process, to final installation. Automation and installation technology such as the Somero Laser Screed are providing 3D pavement contouring, and high daily production capacities with limited manpower. Exciting new opportunities lie ahead implementing the Somero Broom + Cure machine into the contracting process. A machine capable of installing a float finish, broom finish, and penetrating curing/sealing application for de-icing salt protection all in one motion. Silvi is bringing under one roof the technical skillset of raw materials, ready mix production, and high-quality contractor installation to advance concrete paving at a competitive price and scalable to replace asphalt.

2023 is off to a fantastic start releasing this value-added service to our key stakeholders.

Evidence

Silvi Construction’s innovative concept begins with a ready-mix producer bidding directly to install concrete pavement in lieu of asphalt. It doesn’t stop there though.

Performance/Durability/Resilience
Durable Concrete IS Green Concrete. Producing durable concrete pavement requires controlling your water demand, and when this is done right pavements can last 100 years. Water reduction means and methods include higher quality control, aggregate optimization, and ultimately a reduction in cementitious content. At the same time achieving higher compressive strength, higher flexural strength, lower shrinkage/curling, reduced permeability, and an opportunity to reduce concrete depths.
4500 ae psi (Achieving 5000 psi.)- Water Content- 250 lbs.; Cement Content- 600 lbs. W/CM Ratio- 0.42; Low Shrink- <0.04%; Flexural- 800.
Our turnkey package also includes an application of a combination penetrating curing/sealing agent specifically designed to withstand de-icing salts.

Sustainability
Our quality control team has created a sustainable heavy-duty pavement mix design including a three stone coarse aggregate (467/57/8) complimented with a 30% Grade 120 slag scm replacement. This is a reduction of 25 lbs of portland cement with aggregate blending, and 180 lbs of portland cement from slag. A total reduction of 205 lbs (33%) from our standard 4500 psi paving mix design. But at the same time increasing field performance, controlling upfront cost, and designed for increased long term durability that will far exceed typical standard life cycle designs. Quality is increased and not compromised to achieve our sustainability goals. In the summer of 2023 we are following up these advancements with a concrete pavement low carbon EPD score.

Energy Efficiency
Concrete pavement in lieu of asphalt increases lighting efficiency by 35%, and reduces energy requirements by 37.5%. A project reducing 400w lighting to 250w will have a minimum savings of $.013/sf every year in energy costs. Reducing 400w lighting to 125w LED results in a 68.75% savings and $.025/sf in energy costs every year. The upfront luminaire reduction construction cost savings is a minimum of $.75/sf.

Heat island effect- 7°-10°F reduction, and increase the HVAC systems lifespan while lowering utility bills.

Scalability
30,000+ sf every day utilizing the installed curbs, truck aprons/dolly pads as formwork along with a fine grade installed to a +/-0.10” tolerance leads to scale.
